Here's what you need for your first chat on Privee: how to pick a character, what to write back, and which tools to use when a reply misses.
Get the app
Privee runs on iPhone, Android and the web. Download it from the App Store or Google Play, or open it in your browser. It's for adults 18 and over, and you confirm your age when you sign up.
Pick a character
Characters are grouped by genre, from fantasy and mystery to cozy and spooky. Open one to read their introduction and description, then start a chat.
For a first try, pick someone with something already going on, like a detective who has already called you in.
Read the first message, then reply
The character always speaks first, with a message their creator wrote. Some characters have more than one greeting, and a new chat picks one at random.
Say a mechanic's chat opens like this:
The mechanic is working late at the garage when a surprise visitor walks in.
Asterisks mark actions and quotes mark speech. That's optional, but handy. As the visitor, you might send:
I wave from the doorway, car keys in hand. "Sorry, I know it's late. My brakes started grinding on the way home. Could you take a look?"
Now the mechanic has a problem to solve. One-word replies work too, but they leave the character to carry the scene.
When you're stuck or a reply misses
- The suggest-a-reply wand drafts a reply from the chat so far. Send it as is or tweak it.
- Regenerate gets a new version of the character's latest reply. Browse the versions and keep your favorite.
- Edit, in a message's menu, lets you fix a typo or rewrite what you did.
- Rewind to here takes the chat back to a message you choose, so you can try another direction.
- Retry appears if a message fails to send.

Choose who you are
By default you chat as yourself. A persona is a character you make for yourself, with a name and an optional background, so the character knows who they're talking to. Pick one with Speak as before a chat, or switch with the Who are you? chip or the chat settings. Save up to 100 under Profile → Personas and mark one as your default. See Personas explained.
Images, free messages and Privee+
Some characters can create images during a chat: type /image to ask for a picture of the scene. Images count toward your daily image limit.
Privee is free to use. You get a number of free messages each day, and the chat shows how many you have left. Privee+, the subscription, adds 4× chats, 4× images, smarter characters, cinematic images, group chats where several characters share one conversation, and interactive stories.
