Personas: decide who you are in every chat

A persona tells a Privee character who you are in the story. Where to make one, what to put in the background and how to switch mid-chat.

A persona is a character you create for yourself: a name and, if you like, a short background. Chat with one selected and the character knows who you are in the story. Without one, they have to guess.

Make one

Go to Profile → Personas. You can keep up to 100. Each has:

  • Name, up to 100 characters: what characters call you. It's the only required field.
  • Background, optional, up to 1,600 characters: who you are.
  • Set as default: chats start with this persona unless you choose another.

Pick or switch

Before a chat, choose a persona with Speak as. If you've set a default, it's already picked, and you can swap it for this story. Mid-chat, tap the Who are you? chip or open the chat settings to change it. That helps when the story takes a turn, or when you started without one.

Write the background

You rarely need all 1,600 characters. A few sentences that answer three questions are enough:

  1. Who are you? Your role or job in the story.
  2. What are you like? Two or three traits that change how you act.
  3. Why are you here? What you want from this scene.

Use your persona's name rather than he or she, so it's always clear who is meant. Skip details that won't come up: skills, goals and habits help the character react to you, your favorite color doesn't. Leave something unexplained for the story to find, and keep it general if you want to reuse it.

Two examples

For a study session with a tutor:

Name: Priya

Background: Priya is a second-year nursing student with a pharmacology exam in two weeks. Priya learns best from short quiz questions, loses focus in long explanations, and wants to be tested, not lectured.

For a detective who has called you in for questioning:

Name: Zac

Background: Zac runs the corner shop across from the station and saw something odd two nights ago, but isn't sure it matters. Zac is nervous around police, good with faces and bad with dates.

Each sets a role, a couple of traits and a goal. That's plenty for the character to work with.

What a persona changes

Your persona doesn't rewrite the character. The detective is still a detective whether you arrive as Zac or as yourself. What changes is how the character treats you: what they ask, what they explain and what they expect you to do.
