Character.ai is a popular AI character platform that many people enjoy. Apps like these change often, and we can't verify another company's current features, prices or policies, so for the latest on Character.ai, check its own website and help pages.
What Privee is built around
Privee is an app for chatting with AI characters, creating your own and shaping stories with them. It's for adults 18 and over, on iPhone, Android and the web.
Making characters
Create Character and Create Photo in the Studio tab are free. Start from scratch, use Describe to AI (Privee turns 10 to 500 characters into a private draft you can edit), or Import a .png, .json or .byaf character card.
The wizard has four steps: Basics, Character, Image and Review. You set a display name, one-line introduction, description, rating, gender and up to six tags, then write the personality, scenario and first message. You can add up to five alternate greetings (a new chat picks one at random) and example dialogues. Publish as Public (visible in Explore after a quick review), Private or Unlisted, or save a draft.
Pictures
In the Image step, pick Realistic or Illustration, write a visual prompt and, if you like, a negative prompt. Keep up to 10 saved generations and choose a favorite, or upload your own JPEG or PNG and crop it. In chats with characters that support image generation, type /image for a picture of the scene.
Chatting
Personas set who you are in a story. Save up to 100 under Profile → Personas, each with a name, an optional background and a default option. Pick one with Speak as before a chat, and change it later with the Who are you? chip or chat settings.
In a chat you can Regenerate a reply and browse the versions, Edit a message, Rewind to here, use the suggest-a-reply wand, and Retry a message that fails to send.
Privee+
The subscription adds 4× chats, 4× images, smarter characters and cinematic images, plus:
- Group chats: 2 to 6 of your published characters in one conversation, with a turn order and a shared scenario.
- Interactive stories: a title, tagline, synopsis and style, or describe your idea and Privee generates a starting point.
You subscribe in the iOS or Android app. Without it, you still get free messages every day.
How to decide
Questions to ask of any app, Privee included:
- Do you mostly chat, or do you like to create? If you create, compare the tools.
- How much do pictures matter, from character portraits to images mid-chat?
- Do you like playing someone else? Check how each app lets you define who you are.
- Do you want group scenes or guided stories? Check whether the app has them and what they cost.
- Will you use it on your phone, a computer or both?
The simplest test is a few days with each. Pick a character you'd actually talk to and notice which app you keep opening. Many people use more than one.
